Oyarzabal: From a broken knee to a goal worth a European Championship

Last night in Dallas, Spain eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the World Cup round of 16, advancing to the quarterfinals with a last-gasp goal from Mikel Merino in the 91st minute. The media star of the evening wasn't Mikel Oyarzabal: he was, however, the starter who played the entire match as the key attacking midfielder, in a match that, due to its historic distance, political pressure, and global anticipation, was one of the most tense of the entire tournament. It's not the first time Oyarzabal has played a supporting role on a decisive night for his national team—and it's precisely this characteristic, his ability to withstand the weight of enormous moments without almost ever being overwhelmed, that is the common thread of a story worth telling using the tools of sports psychology, not just those of news reporting.

The fact: A career built in one place

Mikel Oyarzabal Ugarte was born in Eibar, Basque Country, in 1997. He joined Real Sociedad's youth academy in 2011, at the age of 14, and has never worn another club's jersey since. Today, he is the club's captain, with over 400 official appearances and the club's second-place finisher in the all-time scoring charts. In a professional football where perpetual transfers are the norm, his loyalty to a single club throughout his career is a statistical anomaly, even more than a choice of heart.

On April 3, 2021, Oyarzabal scored the winning goal in the Copa del Rey against Athletic Bilbao, bringing Real Sociedad a trophy they had missed in 34 years. It was his definitive confirmation as a man who knows what matters. Then, on March 17, 2022, everything stopped: during a training session, he suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The forced layoff lasted at least six months—long enough to exclude him from Spain's squad for the World Cup in Qatar that same year, the only major tournament of his generation he missed.

When injury threatens who you are, not just what you can do

Sports psychology has long distinguished between the physical damage of a serious injury and its impact on a deeper construct: athletic identity, defined by Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder (1993, International Journal of Sport Psychology) as the degree to which a person identifies with the role of athlete. The same authors coined a powerful image for this construct—"Hercules' muscles or Achilles' heel"—to describe its dual nature: a strong athletic identity is an enormous resource for motivation and performance, but it becomes a profound vulnerability precisely when a serious injury threatens to interrupt it.

More specifically, a subsequent study by the same researchers—Brewer, Cornelius, Stephan, and Van Raalte (2010, Psychology of Sport and Exercise), conducted specifically on athletes recovering from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction—documented that many of them implement "self-protective changes" in their athletic identity during rehabilitation: a partial redefinition of the self that psychologically protects them from the risk of failure in recovery, but which can also, if excessive, complicate subsequent full reinvestment in their sporting role. This literature applies almost surgically to Oyarzabal's case: not a generic "serious injury," but precisely the type of injury—anterior cruciate ligament—on which this research was conducted.

It must be said in fairness that we do not have direct access to the internal psychological processes experienced by Oyarzabal during those months away from the camp: what we can observe are his behaviors and his own subsequent words, which offer a valuable clue as to the type of processing he went through.

The return, and a victory that is "worth more"

After the operation, Oyarzabal returned to the field in the 2022-23 season, and Real Sociedad qualified for the Champions League. But it was a year and a half later, on July 14, 2024, that his personal story became intertwined with the more important story of the Spanish national team: a second-half substitute in the Euro 2024 final against England, in the 86th minute Oyarzabal received a low cross from Marc Cucurella and slid in the goal that secured La Roja's fourth continental title, the goal that gave Luis de la Fuente and his team the trophy after a perfectly balanced final.

What makes this episode scientifically interesting is not the goal itself, but what Oyarzabal declared immediately afterward, speaking to RTVE: "I've been through some tough times because of the injury, so this joy is special, after everything I've been through." This sentence is an almost textbook example of what the literature calls post-traumatic growth, the construct systematized by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996, Journal of Traumatic Stress): a positive shift in the attribution of meaning to a painful event, which leads the person to evaluate a subsequent outcome as more valuable precisely because of the suffering experienced to achieve it—not despite it. Unlike other cases we've discussed in the past on this blog, here we're not extrapolating a theoretical model onto observed behavior: we have the athlete's direct and explicit testimony, who himself connects his injury to the increased meaning of the victory.

A Decade of Trust: The Relationship with De la Fuente

There's one final element to Oyarzabal's story that helps explain why, despite his disastrous debut against Cape Verde, no one in Spain really questioned his starting spot in subsequent matches. Oyarzabal has known Luis de la Fuente for over ten years: the current coach of La Roja coached him in 2015, when he was in charge of the Spanish Under-18 national team, in a tournament in Japan that Oyarzabal himself recalled in a recent interview as the starting point of their relationship. Since then, the two have met repeatedly throughout the youth national team ranks, culminating in the senior Roja bench.

Sport psychology has a well-established model for describing what makes a coach-athlete relationship strong over time: Jowett's 3+1 Cs model (2007), which breaks down the relationship into four interdependent dimensions: closeness (the emotional bond based on trust and mutual respect), commitment (the intention of both parties to maintain the relationship over time), complementarity (the ability to cooperate effectively in daily interactions), and co-orientation (the sharing of a common vision of goals and working methods). A decade of continuous professional collaboration, through youth categories and the senior national team, is exactly the type of relational history this model associates with high strength across all four dimensions.

This doesn't mean De la Fuente's faith in Oyarzabal is "unfounded" from a technical standpoint—his career stats alone fully justify it. It does, however, mean that, at the specific moment of the crisis against Cape Verde, the coach had an additional psychological resource at his disposal that other coaches, with a more recent or less consolidated relationship with their striker, wouldn't have had to the same extent: the ability to view that anomalous performance as an isolated incident within a long and reliable history, rather than as a red flag that needs to be addressed with a change of formation or starting lineup. It's a form of mutual confidence that builds over years, not in an international break, and it helps explain—along with the individual resilience mechanisms described above—why confidence in him never wavered even after the worst match of his international career.

The negative record and the silent comeback of this World Cup

The most recent chapter in Oyarzabal's story adds a different piece, less tied to physical trauma and more to short-term performance management. In his World Cup debut against Cape Verde, Oyarzabal had one of the worst games of his career for the Roja: deployed as a center forward, he didn't touch the ball in the first 30 minutes of the game—an all-time low since Opta began collecting this data in 1966—and finished the game with just 25 total touches, the joint-deadliest player in the starting lineup along with the goalkeeper. This is all the more surprising given that he had entered the tournament with 12 goals in his previous 11 appearances for the national team.

From that evening onward, however, his scoring output throughout the tournament changed radically: a brace in a 3-0 victory over Austria in the round of 16, four goals overall in four appearances, before a more self-sacrificing and collective performance against Portugal. It's a pattern well described in the literature on sports resilience: Fletcher and Sarkar (2012, Psychology of Sport and Exercise), in a qualitative study of twelve Olympic champions, showed that the ability to quickly recover from a poor performance within a single tournament—not just from a multi-year trauma like an injury—is a distinct and observable component of elite athletes' psychological resilience, often supported by a rapid cognitive reappraisal of the error (not "I'm useless," but "it was a match, it's not me") and by strong social support within the team.

A limitation of this interpretation should be emphasized: we cannot rule out the possibility that Oyarzabal's marked improvement against Austria also depends on tactical or physical factors independent of his psychology (a different playing system, more space given by the opponent). The coincidence between the behavioral pattern and that described in the resilience literature remains a plausible interpretation, not a causal demonstration.

A thread that ties together his entire career

What makes Oyarzabal's case particularly rich, from a sports psychology perspective, is that it offers a rare example of two different forms of resilience coexisting in the same person: a "slow" resilience, built over many years, over the course of a long recovery from an injury that robbed him of a World Cup and subsequently redefined the meaning of subsequent victories; and a "rapid" resilience, built in the space of ninety minutes, capable of transforming the worst match of his international career into a series of decisive performances in the same tournament, just a week later.

We'll never know for sure how much of his ability to withstand the pressure last night against Portugal—a game he played largely in the shadow of Ronaldo, Yamal, and finally Merino, but without any noticeable declines in performance—derived from this dual experience of rebuilding himself, both slowly and rapidly, as an athlete. What we can say, with the tools that the discipline offers, is that rarely does a single player allow us to observe so clearly, in the span of a few years, both forms of resilience that research has so far studied separately.
